The BMR Calculator
You can use the calculator below to determine your BMR.
What is my Basal Metabolic Rate?
Your Basal Metabolic Rate, or BMR is the number of calories you would burn at
rest. In other words, your BMR is how much energy your body would need to
support itself if you stayed in bed all day. Your BMR is a baseline measurement
that can help you determine how many calories you need to support a healthy
lifestyle.
A calorie is a measurement of energy. If you consume more calories
(energy) than you burn, your body will store the extra energy as fat. If
you burn more calories than you consume, your body will begin to break down this
fat in order to release its stored energy.
How Can Knowing My BMR Help Me Lose Weight?
In order to lose weight, you must burn more calories than you consume.
Several things can affect the number of calories your burn. Your BMR gradually decreases with age. This means that your body requires less calories to support itself than it did when you were younger. An unhealthy
diet can also decrease your BMR, making it harder for you to lose weight. Crash
diets fail because your body senses that you may be starving. In response, it
protects you by slowing things down - just in case it may be a while before your
next meal.
Increasing your BMR is a good thing. The higher your BMR, the higher your
metabolism, and therefore, the rate at which you burn excess fat. You can
increase your BMR by exercising and a healthy diet. |
